| In previous years it has sometimes been difficult to buy a poppy until Rememberance day is almost on us. Happily, I was able to buy my poppy last week in Starbucks; and since then I've seen them available in several places. "We will remember them" | |

| In the news Liverpool Guild of Students have today issued a statement saying that they will now sell poppies in Guild outlets, following discussions this week.
The statement that after the idea of banning the sale of poppies arose, "Our members have contacted us to discuss this matter, and to let us know their views."
"We are proud of our robust debating culture where people including Student Representative Officers are challenged on their viewpoints, and we believe that everyone has the right to a view. As a result of the strength of feeling, and further discussion, the Guild will be selling poppies at Guild outlets."
Within hours of the ban surfacing, over 100 students had signed a petition requesting the sale of poppies, with a total of 386 signatures being put forward.
LGoS have also said that Student Council will have the opportunity to debate the matter further. | |

| The fact that the Liverpool Guild of Students had discussed the idea of banning the sale of poppies is a source of dismay. Someone suggested this during a committee meeting, thinking it was a good idea and worthy of consideration. I despair, I really do. The only encouraging thing about this debacle was that it was stamped out so quickly. | |

| Seen my fisrt poppy today, on a loaf of bread! When Remembrance Sunday rolls around I think of this, by John McCrae. For me it tunes in to the collective sacrifice, and the responsibility that places on us. Haunted?...
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

| Latest news he FA are ready to concede defeat in their bid for England to wear the poppy - despite David Cameron sticking the boot into FIFA. Fabio Capello's side were desperate to have the poppy on their shirt during Saturday's friendly match against Spain at Wembley. But even though Cameron has fired an attack at FIFA over their refusal to change the rules, the FA are now focusing on a series of alternative ways to mark Remembrance Day. Mr Cameron said: 'This seems outrageous. The idea that wearing a poppy to remember those who have given their lives for our freedom is a political act is absurd. Wearing a poppy is an act of huge respect and national pride. I hope that FIFA will reconsider.' The Royal British Legion has backed the FA's stance despite the loss of presence on the players' shirts for the game.

| Well if it wasn't a political act then it certainly is now. I do wonder if the FA retabled their request knowing that it would be refused to stir up a hornet's nest of outrage. The poppy appeal has been around for ages and it's only now that they want it on their shirts? This is music to the conservatives ears when they are trying to drive a wedge between europe and britain. Personally, I am more offended by this: http://millionaire.itv.com/news/Who-Wants-To-Be-A-Millionaire%20-Remembrance-Special/The battle to win a million - why can't this time of year be a time of quiet solemnity and remembrance? | |
