heard from reliable sources in the US that The Colonel is on his deathbead and is preparing himself for his rise to Valhalla.

May he rest in peace.

That is sad news. The Colonel made a vast contribution to the study of the self-protection pistol. I graduated from two of his programs, and spent many hours talking to him on ranges in Austria, Rhodesia, South Africa and England. I learned so much from him.

My thoughts are with Janelle and the family at this time.

The man is an icon, and I really recommend for the young pups growing up reading some of his books....they just dont make men like him anymoore.

Of the many books the Colonel penned I'd especially recommend Principles of Personal Defence, the first treatise on the Mindset and Tactical aspects of self-protection:

For the fascinating life-story read Jeff Cooper The Soul and the Spirit:

According to a Gunsite email, Colonel Cooper died peacefully at home this afternoon
while being cared for by his wife Janelle and daughter Lindy.

There will be a private internment at Gunsite by invitation, with a public memorial service
at the Whittington Center at a date to be announced.

Well that's another of the good guys in Valhalla.
The Colonel virtually spoke in quotes, so let's put some of his most pithy here in this thread.....
"We should afford terrorists all the mercy we give to the rabies virus"

He will be missed.

My thoughts are with his family and friends.

My favourite Den,

" If you don't understand weapons you don't understand fighting. If you don't understand fighting you don't understand war. If you don't understand war you don't understand history. If you don't understand history, you might as well live with your head in a sack."

Lt.Col Jeff Cooper. R.I.P

Here's a very characteristic photo of the Colonel, taken in 1988
Lt Col. Jeff Cooper JeffCooper-edit

He is using his trademark Colt .45 auto, in his version of the Weaver Stance.

Den

One of The Colonel's better quotes:

"One bleeding-heart type asked me in a recent interview if I did not agree that 'violence begets violence.' I told him that it is my earnest endeavor to see that it does. I would like very much to ensure--and in some cases I have--that any man who offers violence to his fellow citizen begets a whole lot more in return than he can enjoy."

Here's another quote from the Colonel, which deserves pondering....

"If you are thinking properly when confronted with lethal force, your shooting technique hardly matters. It is important, however, to understand proper shooting technique in order to instill confidence, because confidence is an important element of proper mind-set. Thus it is well to teach the student how to shoot in order for him to do things right when the need arises".

Quote :
"He holds himself and all others to the highest standards. He acknowledges that only a few excel, but he encourages us all to strive for, applaud, and appreciate the best in all arenas...."
[from The Soul and the Spirit]
A public memorial service will be held on May 10, 2007 at the NRA Whittington Center, Raton, NM, because of the number of people expected. The service will begin about 1:30 on that date in the "Coors Range Building.

Hi Den,

You've mentioned the Col. on many threads and I came across the following pages which I think will be of interest to the community. (My apologies if it has been mentioned before.)

Mr. Frog's Col. Cooper Page

Cooper's "Words From a Wise Bird"

Cooper's essay on Terrorism

PS: Mr. Frog's webiste is very well done and is also a good resource for anyone interested in shooting.

Vash, many thanks for the links.
I well remember the Colonel's Essay on Terrorism, it's particularly relevant now.
Cheers,

With sadness I must report that Janelle Cooper has passed away.
I met Mrs Cooper in Jo'burg at the World Championships, and she was a very gracious lady. She now joins the Colonel in Valhalla.
