The actor served with the Long Range Desert Group, the SAS and the SOE during WWII. Naturally, he refused to say much about it.

I met Sir Christopher, briefly, back in about 1975. As I relate in "Working with Warriors"
Right from the first Miss World Contest I worked; I was given the task of escorting the celebrity judges, within the building, as they arrived at the Albert Hall,. The first of these was Gregory Peck, who, with his imposing stature and tan looked every bit the film star he was. Another was Christopher Lee, who was best known at the time for playing Count Dracula in the Hammer films. When he arrived at the stage door he was told, “This is Dennis, he’ll be your bodyguard” In his deep voice he asked, “Do you think I need a bodyguard?” I replied, “Well, there’s a guy downstairs with a wooden stake, so I wouldn’t take any chances” That went down like a lead balloon.

It was only later that I read about his service with Special Forces.
RIP
