Dear All,
My recently formed group, Commando D Living History Group, shall be present at the Spean Bridge Commando memorial in the Highlands on Rememberance Sunday 2008.
We have been asked to present a demonstration of WW2 close combat skills (unarmed, dagger and pistol) for members of the Commando Veterans Association (CVA), including many veterans themselves, likely on the afternoon of Saturday 8th November. This is our greatest honour yet, and shall be a tremendous opportunity to learn a great deal ourselves from the men who trained in these rare skills first hand.
A primary reason for our attendance is to meet and speak directly with veterans (who sadly become fewer each year) and to learn more about various aspects of Commando training.
As they have given us so much in their lifetimes, and continue to do so today by way of historical knowledge, inspiration and original Commando spirit, the very least we can do is offer something back.
We shall be conducting a speed march from Spean Bridge train station to Achnacarry house, a total of 7 miles, in full WW2 battledress kit on the Saturday morning.
This shall be a sponsored event, with all funds raised going directly to the Commando Veterans Association. We are doing this entirely off our own backs with this being very much the extent of our advertising, so everything in counts!
If you can contribute something towards our efforts directly or forward this to any other WW2 re-enactors or enthusiasts you know, it would be very much appreciated.
Sponsorship monies may be paid directly to the Commando D LHG account via Paypal by using the e-mail address
closecombat@commandos.co.uk We shall be presenting the CVA with a cheque for the total raised on the Saturday after our march.
Any and all money raised will count, so let`s hear it for the lads that endured it for real and gave us so much then and today.
Many thanks to all contributors in advance,
Paul Macdonald,
Commando D LHG
